“Every day we learned something new and had a ton of fun with one another, whether it was cliff diving into the ocean or learning how to drive a dinghy. Overall, Broadreach was super fun for me and I am definitely coming back next summer.” Michael, Broadreach alumnus
Three sailing certifications available:
Two hours of service learning through community-based projects.
Requirements:
The beautiful waters of Anse Marcel are the perfect place to start your adventure, spending the first few days getting to know your new, floating home. Raise the sails, learn how to tack, spend some time at the helm and bond with your fellow crewmates. This is also the perfect location to try out some water sports such as wakeboarding, kneeboarding and water skiing!
Continue on to the perfect beaches and turquoise waters of St. Barts to find shallow reefs teeming with marine life. Spot turtles and rays as you snorkel Colombier, a stunning bay on the island of St Barts. You’ll also hike to a body surfing beach for an afternoon splashing in the waves. Next, docking practice will take place in Gustavia as your group reprovisions and takes in the quaint French capital – the ice cream here is not to be missed!
Practice your navigation and passage planning techniques as you chart a course for St. Kitts. Your longest sail gives everyone a chance to take a watch at the helm and trim the sails. Here, you’ll hike up to Brimstone Hill Fort to understand more about the complex history of island culture in the Leewards. This World Heritage site gives a fascinating look into the life of soldiers in the 17th century and there are stunning views of the surrounding islands from the top.
The Dutch island of Statia is next – the landscape of this cute little island is dominated by a dormant volcano… and you’ll get to hike it! The lush rainforest and crater trail make it feel like something out of a movie. You’ll also take some time to work with the marine park here on some needed projects in the local community. Round out your stay on Statia with a sunset dinner at a local restaurant with your amazing crewmates.
Your final challenge approaches: can you and your crewmates navigate back to St. Martin without the help of your skipper? Everything you’ve learned comes together as you sail together to Tintamarre, an uninhabited island just off the coast of St. Martin. The white sand beaches are the perfect backdrop for last sunny days of snorkeling, beach games and reflecting on your Broadreach experience.
