First Mate

First Mates lead summer live-aboard sailing programs in the Caribbean alongside a skipper/sailing instructor.

First mates assist with sailing instruction, facilitate positive group dynamics, lead games, assist students with cooking and cleaning duties along with fostering personal growth and leadership skills in our students. Our staff prioritize safety and are energetic role models who excel in building meaningful relationships with their students.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Living aboard with students supporting them in day to day life and daily activities of program.
  • Assisting the skipper with sailing instruction
  • Facilitating group activities such as hikes, group games, town time, community service, and downtime.
  • Logistical tasks on program, taking students to the doctor, posting trip updates, arranging activities, provisioning

Qualifications:

  • Experience working with teens required; experience teaching sailing to teens ideal.
  • Strong decision making and problem solving skills, able to work without direct supervision and adaptable to often changing, dynamic environments.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage budget, program expenses, student documents, etc.
  • Passion for mentoring and motivating students.
  • Demonstrated success working on diverse teams with a collaborative mindset.
  • Great communication skills and a professional demeanor to serve as a Broadreach ambassador.
  • Must be able to attend staff training in St. Martin in early June.
  • Availability from early June to early-August required.
  • Comfortable living and working in a group environment with more rustic living conditions. E.g. camp, hostel, liveaboard boat.
  • Wilderness First Responder certification or higher or willingness to obtain before program required. Broadreach offers the opportunity to gain certification at the beginning of the season.

Preferred Skills and Attributes:

  • Significant international travel and program-leading experience preferred.
