Broadreach is Now B Corp Certified: A Commitment to Positive Change

Parents, Wildlife Conservation

At Broadreach Adventures, we’re excited to announce that we are now B Corp certified! This milestone reflects our commitment to creating positive change—not just for our students and their families, but for our employees, the environment, our community, the communities we visit and beyond.

What is B Corp Certification?

The non-profit organization, B Lab, created the B Corp certification for businesses that meet rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability and transparency. This means they prioritize the well-being of all stakeholders, including employees, customers, communities, and the environment, alongside financial profit. Certified B Corporations must demonstrate that they are actively working to balance profit with purpose.

Why Did We Pursue B Corp Certification?

As an organization focused on transformative, adventure-based learning experiences with a focus on conservation*, Broadreach has always strived to be a force for good. But we wanted to take that a step further. Becoming B Corp certified is a tangible way to hold ourselves accountable to that higher standard.

“I’ve always believed that businesses can–and should–help solve some of the world’s most pressing challenges,” said Motts Mueller, Broadreach’s owner and Director. “When I took over ownership of Broadreach, I was committed to making Broadreach a profitable business while also being a good corporate citizen. Pursuing B Corp certification was an opportunity to formalize that commitment.”

What We Did to Earn the Certification

Broadreach began our journey toward B Corp certification in early 2023. To start the certification process, we had to complete a rigorous comprehensive assessment of our performance across five impact areas. B Labs “It was exciting to see that in many areas we were already on the right track towards becoming B Corp certified,” says Katie Payne, the Broadreach HQ staff member who spearheaded the B Corp certification committee. “One of the initiatives we’re especially proud of is the introduction of Volunteer Time Off (VTO), which allows our employees to take paid time to volunteer for causes that matter to them. It’s one way we’re empowering our team to make an impact both inside and outside the workplace.”

In addition, we made adjustments to our employee handbook to better align with B Corp’s rigorous standards, ensuring that our policies promote equity, inclusivity, and environmental stewardship. These may seem like small steps, but they’re important ones that contribute to the broader mission of building a better business.

B Corp certification is not a one-time achievement, but an ongoing process. Every three years, we’ll be reassessed to maintain our certification, and each time we must improve our score. This structure ensures that we don’t just meet the minimum standards but that we are constantly evolving and pushing ourselves to do better.

Looking Ahead

In the coming years, we look forward to continuing our journey toward greater impact. Each reassessment will push us to improve further, keeping our focus on evolving for the betterment of everyone involved in our business. “I’m excited find new ways to help improve the world around us, whether through how we treat our team, our impact on the planet, or the way we engage with our partners and clients,” says Mueller. “I have lots of ideas for growth, but am particularly interested in understanding and mitigating Broadreach’s environmental impact with an eye to ultimately becoming carbon neutral.”

What Does This Mean for Broadreach

Becoming B Corp certified is a significant milestone for Broadreach, but it’s also just the beginning of a longer journey. The certification holds us accountable, but more than that, it serves as a reminder that every decision we make should align with our values. From the trips we organize to the way we support our employees, we’re committed to growing in a way that benefits everyone.

This certification also means that when you work with or for Broadreach, you’re joining a company that prioritizes the well-being of people and the planet just as much as profit. We’re proud to be part of a community of businesses that are working to make the world a better place.

At Broadreach, we believe adventure can be a transformative experience—for individuals, for communities, and for the world. Earning our B Corp certification reinforces our belief that businesses can be a catalyst for positive change, and we’re excited to continue leading the way.
