Three natural science credits available through Lesley University.

Course description: This course surveys natural history, biology, behavior, ecological and social importance, threats and conservation of sharks. Coursework consists of both academic discussions and hands-on field research, examining local shark species and global populations.

Course objectives: 

  • Examine sharks and their relatives from an interdisciplinary perspective that includes comparative anatomy, physiology, ecology, behavior, conservation and international relations.
  • Survey similarities and differences among major shark groupings.
  • Understand the importance of diversity tropical marine systems and the role of apex predators in ecological health.
  • Explore the use of Marine Protected Areas and the importance of connected habitats in mobile marine animals.
  • Discuss and learn about the importance of sharks in the Fijian culture.

One PADI scuba certification available: PADI Advanced Open Water Diver.

Eight hours of service learning through projects dedicated to data collection and maintenance projects.

Requirements:

  • PADI Open Water Diver or equivalent scuba certification.
  • Must be at least 15 years old to participate.

Itinerary

Day 1-4

Bula!

The adventure begins as you travel from Los Angeles to Fiji, crossing the International Date Line with the rest of your group. Upon arrival, you’ll meet your instructors and settle into your new tropical home. After a welcome dinner, dive into shark studies with lessons on the Shark Marine Reserve and a first dive among Fiji’s colorful coral reefs.


 

Day 5-8

PADI Certifications and Cultural Exploration

Now you’ve got into the groove of life on the island, begin working on your PADI Advanced Open Water Certification with daily dives and marine biology lessons. Get a taste of Fijian culture by enjoying local activities like coconut weaving and paddleboarding. Finally, we’ll make our first move, transferring to the Coral Coast, and preparing for our first shark dive!

 


 

Day 9-12

Face-to-face with sharks

At last, dive with sharks at Pacific Harbour with Beqa Adventure Divers! Learn about different shark species and share your knowledge with your peers by giving a presentation on your chosen species. As you learn about shark conservation, enjoy some land-based activities exploring Sigatoka National Park’s impressive sand dunes. Finally, celebrate taking your midterm by settling into new accommodations where you can enjoy fun activities like beach volleyball and Fijian rugby.

 


 

Day 13-17

Sharks are friends

As you continue your shark dives, you’ll start to identify individual sharks by name. Prepare for your final research projects, taking a break to spend a day giving back through a community service project with local schools. Enjoy more coral dives and collect shark teeth as souvenirs… and data for your research project!

 


 

Day 18-22

Final farewell

As your time in Fiji comes to an end, you’ll wrap up your shark dives and gather data for your final research presentations. Present your research findings, celebrate your accomplishments, and enjoy a rafting adventure on the Upper Navua River. On the final day, reflect on the experience, pack up, and head home with lifelong memories and new skills.
